It was great to join other family leaders from the Family Run Executive Director’s Leadership Association (FREDLA) to meet with the Administrator of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Kana Enomoto (via phone) and Larke Huang, advisor to Kana on children’s mental health issues, to discuss the critical role of family-run organizations in systems of care for children’s mental health. The focus of the discussion was on the following points: a) Using SAMHSA’s influential role in promoting and supporting family-run organizations in the states, b) Increasing the number of statewide family network grants and, c) Changing the language of “Serious Emotionally Disturbed” to less stigmatizing language.
