As you may be aware, Mississippi is set to receive almost $190 million over 10 years of the $17 billion Meta settlement from lawsuits that accused the company (which owns Facebook and Instagram) of fostering teen social media addiction.
Our state Attorney General has decided to split the first year of the settlement funds between the Department of Mental Health ($6.8 million), the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks ($6 million) and the Mississippi Department of Education ($6 million).
While this may seem like a lot of money, the needs are vast, and it will be important for these organizations to spend wisely. We look forward to hearing how they spend it and hope the process will be transparent. We encourage the State to keep the public informed as to how these funds are used.
