Federal Government: Medications for Opioid-Use Disorder Can Be Part of a Plan to Help Keep Families Together

  • Post category:News

This week, we share a press release from the Administration for Children and Families, the federal agency that oversees states’ foster care systems and other child welfare programs. This press release describes that three drugs used to treat opioid addiction can now be used in part of a well-supported approach to keep families together when parents or caregivers are dealing with opioid-use disorders.

As a grassroots family-run organization, we do not have the expertise to assess substance-use disorder treatments. We are very supportive of any efforts that keep families together, so we appreciate learning about this initiative. We encourage everyone to read this press release thoughtfully. We welcome your feedback on it, especially from those of you with lived experience of this issue as a biological or foster family. We know opioid use has devastated and separated many families.

We look forward to learning more about this proposed intervention and how it can support families and keep children in their homes. Although we have much to learn, we agree with President Trump’s statement that “the best foster care system is one that is not needed in the first place.”
