SUMMARY:988 and What it means for Families of People with Serious Mental Illness
DESCRIPTION:A SAMHSA-Sponsored Webinar \n988*\, the new three-digit number for mental health and suicidal crises\, will be available nationwide by July 16\, 2022. Once live\, 988 is poised to change the way communities respond to people in crisis\, connecting individuals to trained crisis counselors that can provide de-escalation and mental health intervention services by phone. This new number holds lots of promise\, but what does this change mean for families of people with serious mental illness? \nDuring this webinar\, hear from experts about the national rollout of 988\, and how families and people with serious mental illness are involved. Learn from advocates working in two different states about what is going right and where efforts are coming up against challenges. Finally\, hear how your family can prepare to use 988 when it becomes available\, with practical tips for crisis planning. \nFollowing this 90-minute webinar\, participants will be able to register for Part Two\, taking place on Monday\, July 18th from 3:00 – 4:00 pm ET. Part Two will be a 60-minute intimate dialogue with the presenters and a smaller number of registered webinar participants from Part One\, who will be able to ask more detailed questions and engage with the presenters more comprehensively. \nLearning objectives:\n1) Know what is happening nationally with the rollout of 988 and how the peer and family perspective is being represented.\n2) Learn from two-state examples of how the peer and family perspective is being brought into discussions\n3) Learn how individuals and their families can incorporate 988 in planning a possible mental health crisis \n*988 will not be available widely until July 16\, 2022. If you or a loved one is experiencing a crisis\, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255)\, visit suicidepreventionlifeline.org/chat or text “HOME” to 741-741. \nSpeakers\nStephanie Pasternak\, Director of State Affairs for NAMI\nJoy Hogge\, Ph.D.\, Executive Director of Families As Allies\nChris Bouneff\, Executive Director of the Oregon chapter of NAMI\nTeri Brister\, Ph.D.\, Chief Program Officer at NAMI \n\n\n\nRegister here >>

SUMMARY:2022 Creating Your Own Path: Successful Transitions for Persons with Autism
DESCRIPTION:Mississippi Statewide Autism Training Initiative \nThe importance of transitions for those with autism cannot be stressed enough and doesn’t happen overnight. The objective of this conference is to provide parents\, advocates\, professionals\, and people with autism the opportunity to learn about resources and evidence-based best practices regarding planning and executing successful transitions. \n\nFeatured Speaker – Raun Kaufman \nRaun K. Kaufman is the author of the book Autism Breakthrough: The Groundbreaking Method That Has Helped Families All Over the World and the former CEO of the Autism Treatment Center of America®.  \nAn international lecturer and graduate of the Ivy League’s Brown University with a degree in Biomedical Ethics\, Raun has completed lecture tours in the U.S.\, United Kingdom\, Ireland\, the Netherlands\, Belgium\, Sweden\, Norway\, Spain\, Portugal\, Poland\, Romania\, France\, Japan\, Singapore\, the Philippines\, Malaysia\, and Vietnam. \nHis articles have been featured in journals such as The Autism File and Good Autism Practice and in books such as Silver Linings and Cutting-Edge Therapies for Autism.   \nHe has been interviewed by media such as National Public Radio\, BBC Television\, Fox News Channel\, The London Telegraph\, and People Magazine. \nIn addition to his work with families and educators for almost 25 years\, Raun brings a distinctive qualification to the realm of autism treatment: his own personal history.  \nAs a child\, Raun was diagnosed with so-called “severe” (non-speaking) autism and recommended for lifelong institutionalization. Instead\, his parents worked with him in a totally new way they developed\, enabling him to blossom\, grow\, and\, ultimately\, accomplish everything his parents were promised he would not. (A best-selling book and award-winning television movie were made about his journey.) \nRead more about Raun here>> \n\n\nThe conference will include: \n\nKeynote address – Neuro-Crash: The Real Cause of Meltdowns\, Transition Anxiety and Explosive Behaviors\nBreakout sessions on sensory differences\, autism in the classroom\, behavior\, accommodations in the workplace and social skills\nFamily and Adult Panel\nOpportunities to network with speakers\, providers\, professionals and family members\n\nVIEW THE CONFERENCE AGENDA \nRegistration Fee\nThrough August 31 – $125\nSeptember 1-8 – $150\nStudents $50 (must show student ID) \n\nRegister here >>
