DESCRIPTION:Join Justice for Families Learning Series\nCommunity Partnerships and Opportunity for True\nFamily Engagement \n  \n  \nFEATURED SPEAKERS:\nWilletta Perryman and Dr.Tracee Perryman PhD. \nDr. Perryman founding member of The Center of Hope ELEVATE Program provides literacy\, youth development\, and coding programs to help students perform better on standardized tests\, avoid delinquency\, and become marketable to enter the workforce upon high school graduation. Before COVID-19\, students in grades k-4 would enjoy weekly enrichment activities and free dinner and snacks from Monday until Thursday. \nELEVATE has achieved results in line with promoting students’ development\, school attendance\, and positive behavior. Parents and young people agreed that the ELEVATE program staff cared about their children and wanted to see them succeed. One hundred percent of school staff members reported that the ELEVATE program helped students. \nBy her side is her amazing mom and leader Willetta Perryman together they have built a community that supports many young people and allows for true change. It is with their guidance and heart that the community is supported in the next steps. \nJeannette Boanegra-Simon is the Executive Director for Justice For Families. She is a dedicated mother of six\, a grandmother of two\, and a longtime resident of the South Bronx. In 2011\, Jeannette became the lead researcher in the Bronx for Justice For Families’ groundbreaking Families Unlocking Futures report and ultimately joined Community Connections for Youth (CCFY) where she served as the organization’s first Director of Family Engagement. At CCFY\, she developed the organization’s Family Strengthening portfolio and initiated the groundbreaking Parent Support Program (PSP) in partnership with the NYC Department of Probation. She is also a member of several advisory boards\nfor juvenile justice initiatives in New York City where she represents the voice of impacted families. \nJeannette’s commitment to advocating for families with youth in the juvenile justice system is based on her own difficult experiences as the parent of an incarcerated youth. Prior to doing this work\, Jeannette was involved with parent advocacy and educational reform and served as the Parent Involvement Coordinator at ASPIRA of NY. Whether you are a researcher\, advocate\, legislator\, agency or state\ndecision or policy maker\, practitioner\, or a consumer of the child welfare system with lived\nexperience\, we are asking you to participate in a series of engaging and insightful conversations\nintended to broaden awareness of needed change\, identify research gaps\, and ultimately\nrevolutionize the child welfare system with a much-needed diversity\, equity\, and inclusion (DEI)\nperspective. Your voice could help us launch the child welfare system into the 21st Century\, ultimately\nhelping the children\, families\, communities\, and the nation to give it the potential to serve those in\nneed as it should. \nBackground: Recently\, the Child Welfare League of America (CWLA)\, the American Public Human\nServices Association (APHSA)\, and the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare\n(AASWSW) were asked by Casey Family Programs\, The Annie E. Casey Foundation\, and the William\nT. Grant Foundation to engage you and your peers in a collaborative review of a draft 21st Century\nResearch Agenda. For additional information\, please see Building a 21st Century Research Agenda to\nIncrease the Use of Research in Child Welfare Decision-Making. \nAccording to the three foundations\, “The purpose of building a 21st Century research agenda –\ngrounded in diversity\, equity\, and inclusion – to support child and family well-being is to (1) form a\nbroad-based coalition of research partners to identify research gaps to support child welfare\, (2)\narticulate clear research questions that need to be addressed that are relevant for families\,\njurisdiction leaders\, policy-makers and practitioners; (3) identify research strategies that will close\nthe gaps and answer those key questions; and (4) help agencies use findings to improve policy\,\nprogram and practice strategies resulting in transformative systems change. \nThe Event: Each of the three National organizations had specific groups we were asked to get input\nfrom: APHSA for the public agencies\, AASWSW for researchers\, and CWLA the private sector\, direct\nservice\, and those with lived experience (birth parents and youth). So you might also be hearing from\nthem. CWLA will be providing numerous opportunities\, so we gather input from as broad a group as\npossible. Members of various CWLA committees will have an additional opportunity for input. \nWe will be holding a series of virtual input meetings that anyone can participate in beginning with\nour first convening on July 20\, 2021\, and our last convening to be held on August 12\, 2021. DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by SAMHSA  \nWe have lived through unprecedented times as the realities of the Covid-19 pandemic\, racial turmoil\, political upheaval and even weather crises spread across our communities. From March of 2020 until this upcoming September of 2021\, many schools were completely closed while others offered a hybrid model of education. Many parents were unexpectedly working from home or worse – out of work altogether. These circumstances resulted in heightened stress\, anxiety\, social isolation\, fear\, and trauma for our children. In addition\, virtual schooling did not always provide the needed academic or social supports for many students as they fell behind both academically and developmentally. Now\, as the curtain begins to lift\, and the “new normal” rolls into place\, schools are re-opening and many parents are back to work. How do parents\, teachers\, and caring adults within the community provide the supports children need to make this next transition in ways that are both affirming\, and successful? DESCRIPTION:After a year and a half of grappling with the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic\, students across the country are slated to return to school in person this fall. However\, for many\, especially parents\, the return to in-person instruction has brought with it a variety of worries\, hesitations\, and questions:\n\n\n– Will my child(ren) be safe at school?\n– What COVID precautions should I look for in my child’s school?\n– How will schools take my child’s social and emotional well-being into account?\n– Is the vaccine safe?\n– Should I get the vaccine?\n– Should my child(ren) get the vaccine? \nWhile one of the Biden Administration’s top priorities is to have all students back in-person this fall\, they recognize that this goal will not be met if parents’ voices are not heard\, and their concerns are taken into account. This Parent Town Hall is a unique opportunity for parents to share their ideas and concerns\, and to get their questions answered. \nDuring the event\, panelists from the US Department of Education and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will answer parents’ questions and address concerns around the return to in-person instruction. \nParents are invited to submit questions about the return to in-person instruction below. SUMMARY:The Work of SAMHSA's Statewide Family Networks in the Lives of Children with Serious Emotional Disturbance and their Families
DESCRIPTION:A SAMHSA sponsored webinar. \nThe Statewide Family Network Program builds on the work of SAMHSA’s Center for Mental Health Services which helped to establish a child and family focus in programs serving children and adolescents with mental health challenges around the country. The purpose of this program is to enhance state capacity and infrastructure to better respond to the needs of children and adolescents with serious emotional disturbance and their families by providing information\, referrals\, and support to families who have a child with a mental health challenge\, and to create a mechanism for families to participate in State and local mental health services planning and policy development. The Statewide Family Network program closely aligns with SAMHSA’s Recovery Support Strategic Initiative and funding is limited to family-controlled domestic public and private nonprofit organizations in states\, territories\, and Tribes. A family-controlled organization is an organization that has a board of directors made up of more than 50% family members who have primary daily responsibility for the raising of a child\, youth\, adolescent or young adult with a serious emotional disturbance up to age 18\, or 21 if the adolescent is being served by an Individual Educational Plan (IEP)\, or age 26 if the young adult is being served by an Individual Service plan in transition to the adult mental health system. SAMHSA limits eligibility to family-controlled organizations to strengthen the capacity of families with children who have serious emotional disturbance to act as agents of transformation in influencing the type and amount of services provided to them and their children and to ensure their mental health care is family driven and youth guided. \nJoin this webinar for a panel discussion with the Executive Directors of three Statewide Family Networks and the Public Health Advisor with the Child\, Adolescent and Family Branch who serves as the Project Officer. \nThis panel will explore:\n1. SUMMARY:An Update on the Latest Treatment Strategies for Suicidal Adolescents and Parents/Caregivers
DESCRIPTION:Suicide is a significant public health problem in the United States and remains the second leading cause of death among high school teens 14 to 18 years. Between 2009 and 2018\, suicide rates for those 14 to 18 years old increased by 61.7%\, from 6.0 to 9.7 per 100\,000. In addition to deaths by suicide\, there are many more who make a suicide attempts or struggle with suicidal ideation. Misuse of alcohol and drugs significantly increases the risk of suicidal behavior in adolescents.\n\n\n\nIn this 90 minute presentation\, Dr. Spirito will overview the role of substance use in adolescent suicidal behaviors. He will describe the core treatment techniques for suicidal adolescents that cut across evidence-based practices with the strongest data\, including those that integrate substance use treatment strategies for suicidal adolescents and their parents/caregivers.\n\n\nRegister here >>
