SUMMARY:Strategies to Prevent and Treat Adolescent Substance Use
DESCRIPTION:John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health \nApproximately 1 in 5 youth ages 12-17 are participating in substance use\, including alcohol\, tobacco\, and cigarettes\, and illicit drugs. \nYouth and adolescents who use substances are at risk of using as adults\, and to limit this risk it is important to not only connect those currently using with helpful resources but also to prevent use before it begins. It is a challenge to identify youth who are struggling\, and once identified\, the wait to receive care is often prohibitive to timely treatment. \nPotential options for increasing screening and access to treatment include creating systems within primary care settings (90% of youth receive primary care)\, including school systems in screening and treatment\, and stand-alone digital interventions. Join Dr. Uche Aneni as she discusses some of the most pressing issues in the youth substance use space and opportunities to treat and prevent use. \nThis event will be virtual. \n\n\nABOUT\nKammarauche Aneni\n\n\n\n\nDr. Kammarauche Aneni is an Assistant Professor of Child Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Aneni received her MBBS from the University of Ibadan College of Medicine\, Followed by her MHS from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She later became the Chief Resident at Duke University Hospital and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellow at Yale School of Medicine. \nDr. Aneni has received serval awards\, including the NIDA HEAL Diversity Supplement from the National Institute on Drug Abuse\, the YCCI Scholar Award from Yale Center for Clinical Investigation\, the NIDA CTBH Pilot Award from the Center for Technology and Behavioral Health\, as well as the NIH AIM-AHEAD Fellowship Program in Leadership from the NIH. \nRegister here>>

SUMMARY:Family Connections: Parenting and Recovery
DESCRIPTION:National Family Support Technical Assistance Center \nSeptember is Recovery Month\, when we celebrate the gains made by people in recovery from substance use and/or mental health: every person\, every family\, and every community. \nIt’s never just about one person being in recovery: families can – and do – recover together. With support\, they can establish a new family dynamic\, learn about the challenges of substance use and/or mental health\, and heal together. Each family member may gain a new perspective and practice new behaviors – not simply to rebuild a relationship\, but to create a healthy one. \nSometimes change can be especially complicated when it involves a parent or caregiver. Their roles often come with established ideas of how that parent/child relationship will develop over the lifespan. When a child of any age experiences mental health and/or substance use challenges\, it changes the dynamic. You’ll meet a father and son who will share their individual experiences\, and how they built the relationship their family has today. \nRegister here >> \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES: \n\nParticipants will learn about navigating the changes that may occur in relationships that are a natural part of recovery.\nAcceptance Factor: understand how a family with lived experience adjusted their roles and expectations before\, during\, and after recovery.\nSocial Justice Factor: The family sees each person’s potential and works together to support one another in their individual goals.\n\nWant more Family Connections? Follow NFSTAC on Eventbrite to see what’s coming up next. \nThis event is free and open to all families\, parents\, caregivers\, and to the family workforce\, organizations and communities that support them. You can also request No-Cost Technical Assistance or Training from NFSTAC at: www.nfstac.org/request-ta. \nThe National Family Support Technical Assistance Center of Excellence (COE) Grant #1H79F6000160-Fam-CoE is funded by SAMHSA. The National Family Support Technical Assistance Center is led by the National Federation of Families. \nProviding Family Support Across the Lifespan | www.nfstac.org | info@nfstac.org

SUMMARY:Family Engagement in School Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:National Family Support TAC \nFamilies and schools don’t always have the same ideas about family engagement. In this webinar\, we will detail ways to bring families and schools together on the “family engagement” concept. Family engagement is a collaborative and strengths-based process through which the workforce\, families\, and children build positive and goal-oriented relationships. It is a shared responsibility of families and school staff at all levels that require mutual respect for the roles and the strengths each has to offer. With successful family partnerships\, schools can move from family involvement to family engagement. \n\n\n\nRegister here>>

SUMMARY:Bullying Prevention: How Parents and Families Can Help
DESCRIPTION:Patty Gautier\, Reach MS \nOctober is National Bullying Prevention Month. Everyone can do something to help prevent bullying – individuals\, schools\, and communities each have an important role! Bullying is real. It happens every day. Bullying hurts emotionally and physically. Sometimes\, bullying even kills. But YOU can help the kids in your life to stop school bullying. We have the power to make a difference. Every adult who is raising a child can help in the effort to eliminate bullying by talking honestly and openly with that child about bullying experiences at school. SUMMARY:COVID-19 & Education Impact Report Virtual Briefing
DESCRIPTION:The Mississippi Center for Justice (MCJ) invites you to attend a virtual briefing on our newly released COVID-19 & Education Impact Report\, on Wednesday\, September 27\, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. CT. \nIn 2022\, MCJ initiated research to better understand how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted Mississippi’s education system\, specifically students in Delta communities. We spent more than a year conducting parent focus groups and examining educational testing data in 12 underfunded Mississippi school districts. Through this research\, we gained firsthand knowledge of some of the challenges faced within these districts. \nSome of the key findings revealed are: \n\nLack of adequate internet access – Mississippi is one of 10 states with the largest population of K-12 students affected by lack of broadband availability.\nLearning loss – While districts have rebounded from the pandemic\, districts in the report have proficiency rates that remain far below the State average in reading and math in grades 3rd-8th.\nInsufficient support services for students with disabilities – Only three districts in the report meet expectations for special education based on the state annual performance report.\nUnder-resourced mental health support systems – Mississippi is ranked 47th in access to mental healthcare.\n\nThe challenges to education brought forth by the COVID-19 pandemic were not unique to Mississippi\, as national assessments and studies reveal a decline in student achievement and well-being across the country. However\, the long-standing education inequities in Mississippi\, coupled with the pandemic\, generated a snowball effect of learning crises for districts in the report. \nMCJ is deeply committed to dismantling the educational disparities identified in the report to bring about education equity for children and families. During the pandemic\, our under-resourced districts faced profound challenges\, confirming a truth that I know to be certain: We cannot do this work alone. As educators\, administrators\, and advocates experiencing first-hand the challenges within school districts\, you know we cannot afford to underestimate the long-term effects of these challenges\, and we cannot ignore the grave consequences of inequitable education for children in rural\, high-need African-American school districts. \nWe hope you can join the virtual briefing on Wednesday\, September 27\, via Zoom. \nRegister here >>
