SUMMARY:Canopy Children’s Solutions - Children's Mental Health Summit
DESCRIPTION:Canopy Children’s Solutions \n  \nKeynote Speakers: \nKimberly Noble\, MD\, PhD\, is a Professor of Neuroscience and Education at Teachers College\, Columbia University. As a neuroscientist and board-certified pediatrician\, she studies how socioeconomic inequality relates to children’s cognitive and brain development. Her work examines socioeconomic disparities in cognitive development\, as well as brain structure and function\, across infancy\, childhood and adolescence. \nShe has funding from the NIH and more than a dozen private foundations\, and is one of the principal investigators of Baby’s First Years\, the first clinical trial of poverty reduction in the first three years of life. \nDr. Noble received her undergraduate\, graduate and medical degrees at the University of Pennsylvania. She was the recipient of the Association for Psychological Science Janet Taylor Spence Award for Transformative Early Career Contributions\, the American Psychological Association award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest\, and is a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science. Her TED talk has received more than 2 million views to date\, and her work has received worldwide attention in the popular press. \nPiali Ghose is the Senior Director of the MICROSOFT Garage in Reston\, VA. The Garage delivers programs and experiences to Microsoft employees\, customers\, and partners that drive collaboration\, creativity\, and experimentation. The Garage’s motto “doers\, not talkers” continues to be the core of what they are. The Garage attracts people who are passionate about making a difference in the world. They are relentlessly curious and lifelong\, hands-on learners. By actively participating in the creative process\, regardless of success or failure\, each person gets the opportunity to gain valuable insights\, increase their knowledge\, and learn diverse perspectives. \nPiali has been with Microsoft since 2011 and lives in the D.C. area. She received an undergraduate degree from St. Xavier’s College and her master of science and master of business administration from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In 2021\, Piali received Microsoft’s Federal Consulting Stars & Stripes Manager Award. DESCRIPTION:For the past 8 years\, several state and local agencies have joined together to host the annual Trauma-Informed Care Conference. Each year\, the conference has brought together over 500 diverse participants representing a wide array of service providers. This year’s theme\, “Building Resiliency through the Pandemic\,” was chosen to provide optimism that we will work through this difficult time by developing new coping strategies and building resiliency skills. \nResiliency is defined as the process of adapting well in the face of adversity\, trauma\, tragedy\, threats\, or significant sources of stress. Through innovative and thought-provoking sessions\, it is our expectation the conference will provide information to assist attendees in working through this difficult time and also help in improving lives even in the absence of adversity. \n\nThis is a “Virtual Conference”. You will need appropriate equipment to participate (i.e. laptop\, desktop\, etc…)*. You will be required to sign in to our Zoom virtual platform by entering your name. Each year\, the premier conference has brought together over 400 – 500 diverse participants representing a wide array of service providers. \nThis year’s theme\, “Finding Hope in a Never Ending Storm” continues to use the “Storm” as the analogy for “Trauma” as with previous year’s theme as well as focusing on the current mental health crisis heightened by the pandemic. \nThese unprecedented times have been a struggle for everyone! The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic effect on mental health has been substantial. There has been a 400% increase of reported symptoms of anxiety or depression disorder among adults and up to a 30% increase of ER visits by children for mental health issues. \nHope is defined as an optimistic state of mind that is based on an expectation of positive outcomes with respect to events and circumstances in one’s life or the world at large. Through innovative and thought-provoking sessions\, it is our expectation the conference will stimulate the process of reclaiming hope to attendees. This includes inspiring hope that survivors can and do recover\, practicing self-care when you feel your hope is slipping due to burnout\, and applying principles of Trauma Informed Care to respond effectively and prevent further trauma. \nThe 2022 Mississippi Trauma Informed Care Conference planning committee is seeking 60 – 90\nminutes keynote presentations and 60 – 90 minutes breakout sessions. DESCRIPTION:Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence \nTeen dating violence is a problem of epidemic proportions that has plagued our nation for decades. Thousands and even millions of teens around the country\, both boys and girls\, are abused in one way or another every year. \nTeens often think some behaviors\, like teasing and name-calling\, are a “normal” part of a relationship\, but these behaviors can become abusive and develop into serious forms of violence. Many teens do not report unhealthy behaviors because they are afraid to tell family and friends. Nearly 1 in 11 female and approximately 1 in 14 male high school students report having experienced physical dating violence in the last year. About 1 in 8 female and 1 in 26 male high school students report having experienced sexual dating violence in the last year. (CDC\, 2021). \nBullying often leads to suicidal tendencies among children and youth. It leads to psychological disorders related to depression\, violent behavior\, and drug abuse. Students reporting frequent bullying by others are at a high risk of suicidal behavior. Victims of bullying by peers are 2.2 times more likely to develop a suicidal tendency. These students are 2.6 times more likely to commit suicide as compared to the normal students. \nWhile the numbers surrounding these unfortunate anomalies are troubling\, there is reason for hope.
