SUMMARY:2024 NAMI Mississippi State Conference on Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:NAMI \n“Where Mental Meets Physical” Inspired by the new NAMI Hearts + Minds program\, this year’s theme was chosen as physical and mental health are connected. Research suggests that the two are so closely linked that they can even directly affect one another. For example\, depression can increase one’s risk for diabetes\, heart disease\, or stroke\, and chronic conditions such as cancer or heart disease can increase a person’s risk of developing a mental health condition. \nThe conference will be held from May 16-17\, 2024\, with half-day sessions on Friday\, May 17. Lunch on Thursday\, May 16\, is included. CEUs are being applied for and included unless the issuer requires a separate payment. \nPEER SCHOLARSHIP \nAre you a Peer? (those living with a mental illness\, co-occurring disorder\, or substance use disorder) \nIf you are a Peer\, NAMI Mississippi offers a scholarship to attend the 2024 State Conference. Lodging is not included. Please complete this online application by clicking here to be considered for the 25 available scholarships. \nThe deadline for the Peer Scholarship application is April 30\, 2024. \nRegister here>> \n

SUMMARY:Creating Your Own Path: Successful Transitions for Persons with Autism
DESCRIPTION:MS Department of Rehabilitation Services \n\n\nThe importance of transitions for those with autism cannot be stressed enough and doesn’t happen overnight. The objective of this conference is to provide parents\, advocates\, professionals\, and people with autism the opportunity to learn about resources and evidence-based best practices regarding planning and executing successful transitions. \n\n\nThe conference will be held on September 7-8\, 2023 at the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services in Madison\, MS\, and will feature motivational speaker and autism advocate Anthony Ianni. \n\n\n\nAt the age of four Anthony was diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD)\, which is on the Autism Spectrum (ASD). Doctors and specialists told Anthony’s parents that he would barely graduate from high school\, would never graduate from college\, would never have a shot at being an athlete and would likely live in a group institution with other Autistic kids for his adult life. His family was devastated but pledged they would help Anthony be successful no matter what. \n\n\n\nAnthony graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in sociology in 2012 and was a winner of various awards during his time as a basketball player. He was a two-time Big Ten Champion\, a Big Ten Tournament Champion\, and a member of the 2010 Final Four team. He won the 2011 Tim Bograkos Walk On award and the 2012 Unsung Player award. \n\n\nAnthony has pledged his life and career to help those who face similar challenges. He has been invited to tell his story and share his message across the country and has inspired countless individuals to be “Relentless” and achieve their goals and dreams. \n\n\n\n\nYou will also hear from agencies\, organizations and individuals within our state about exciting initiatives changing the future for Mississippians with ASD and other disabilities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION AND TO REGISTER \n\n\n\nA limited number of scholarships are available for autistic individuals and family members. \n\n\n\nFor questions or assistance with registration\, contact:\nJennifer Johnson\nCoalition for Citizens with Disabilities/MSPTI\njennifer@mspti.org\n(601) 969-0601
